La Placide: Roger Dubuis’ Nocturnal Ode to Serenity

At Dubai Watch Week, the final chapter of Roger Dubuis’ “La Placide” series unveiled a singular celebration of its founder with the Hommage "Sukoon Al-Layl"; a timepiece as tranquil as the desert night it evokes. More than a watch, it is a narrative of heritage, modernity, and the quiet strength of a visionary.

In 1996, the original Hommage paid respect to the mentors, friends, and watchmakers who shaped Roger Dubuis’ career. Nearly three decades later, the tables have turned: this time, it is the Maison’s founder himself who is immortalised. Nicknamed “Placide” from his youth, Dubuis was renowned for a calm demeanour and gentle wisdom, traits that now echo in every detail of this creation.

“Sukoon,” meaning serenity, and “Al-Layl,” night, reference not only his tranquil spirit but also his passion for celestial horology. The timepiece bridges Middle Eastern astronomical inspiration with Swiss watchmaking mastery, making the Perpetual Calendar complication, complete with a biretrograde display, a fitting centrepiece.

The 38 mm watch is crafted entirely in platinum, case, bezel, crown, caseback, and triple-folding buckle, casting the silvery glow of moonlight across the wrist. Its Astral Blue calfskin strap, woven with subtle platinum threads, complements the serene motif, while the Maison’s first logo, engraved on the crown, anchors the design in heritage.

The dial is a study in layered artistry:

  • Flange & Calendar Segments: Mother-of-pearl brings luminous contrast, with hand-bevelled edges and transferred text for refined depth.
  • Main Plate: Guilloché waves recall desert sands sculpted by wind, finished in Astral Blue lacquer that shifts with ambient light.
  • Moonphase: Aventurine night sky with domed 18K yellow gold moons nods to the Maison’s earliest Perpetual Calendars.
  • Hands & Numerals: 18K white gold hands glide over four Arabic numerals, paying tribute to Middle Eastern culture.

The interplay of materials and finishes creates a multi-dimensional effect, reflecting the Maison’s modern expressivity while honouring its roots.

At its core, the Hommage “Sukoon Al-Layl” houses the RD1472 calibre, marrying the updated RD14 automatic movement with the RD72 biretrograde Perpetual Calendar module. This fusion revives Dubuis’ first in-house movement from 2004 while incorporating historic elements like swan-neck regulation and pistol-shaped bridges techniques reminiscent of classic pocket watches.

The RD72 module, originally from 1999, delivers day, date, month, leap year, and moonphase displays with the Maison’s signature biretrograde elegance. Crafted with 307 components, including a new 18K pink gold rotor, the movement is finished across 15 techniques and rigorously tested to meet the Poinçon de Genève’s chronometric standards.

The Hommage “Sukoon Al-Layl” is more than a watch; it is a poetic reflection of Roger Dubuis’ life, vision, and enduring serenity. In capturing the stillness of desert nights, the Maison not only commemorates its founder but also elevates watchmaking to a celestial art form.

This one-of-a-kind piece, unveiled exclusively at Dubai Watch Week, closes the year’s La Placide chapter with the perfect harmony of technical mastery, heritage, and emotion; a fitting tribute to a man who embodied calm and elegance in equal measure.
